Sri Lanka to relocate 42 families affected by floods

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s cabinet of ministers have approved a proposal to relocate 42 families affected by the recent overflowing of the Buthgamuwa canal in Jayawardenapura Kotte, to new residences in government housing schemes provided for lower-income earners.

A statement from the cabinet office said on Tuesday (11) that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, in his capacity as Minister of Defence, has made the proposal.

“The need has been identified to resettle 42 families affected by the frequent floods during the monsoon season caused by the overflow of the Buthgamuwa canal in the 514 Welikada East Grama Niladhari Division of the Jayawardenapura Kotte Divisional Secretariat,” the statement said.

A programme to settle people living in landslide prone areas is also under way in 14 districts, the statement further said, adding that it is advisable to include people living in areas that are frequently affected by natural disasters in the resettlement list.

According to the statement, 1,558 families have been resettled under the programme so far.
