Sri Lanka Met Dept warns heavy rains and floods due to atmospheric disturbance

ECONOMYNEXT – The Meteorology Department of Sri Lanka on Thursday (25) warned of heavy rainfall and possible floods that can occur due to a low-level atmospheric disturbance over south-east of Sri Lanka.

The Met Department said the prevailing atmospheric disturbance, which also adjoins the south-west Bay of Bengal, has developed into a low-pressure area and is currently located in east of the island.

The department said under the influence of this system, heavy showers above 100 millimeters can be expected in parts of the Eastern, Uva, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North Western, Western and Southern provinces and in the Polonnaruwa district.

“Fairly heavy showers above 75mm can be expected elsewhere in the island,” it said.

Meanwhile, the Irrigation Department said with dam doors opened, the Deduru Oya reservoir in Wariyapola is spilling at a discharge rate of 27,800 cubic feet per second at the time of writing.

The department said the decision to open the dam doors was taken due to the considerable rainfall that occurred in the upstream catchment areas of the Deduru Oya basin since Wednesday (24).

“Because of upcoming rainfall the spilling discharge will be increased,” it said in a statement.

Upon analysing this situation, the department said, there is a significant possibility of a flood situation in the low lying areas of the Deduru Oya valley, namely in Wariyapola, Nikaweratiya, Mahawa, Kobeigane, Bingiriya, Pallama, Chilaw, Arachchikattuwa and Rasnayakapura district secretariat divisions.

The department asked residents and people driving through these areas to be vigilant. (Colombo/Nov25/2021)
