Gas cylinders explode due to a change in its composition – Government Analyst’s Department

Several accidents due to gas cylinder explosions have been reported in recent days. The Government Analyst’s Department has confirmed that the gas cylinder exploded due to a change in its composition during filling.

As Sri Lanka is a tropical country, the composition of the gas should contain a low percentage of propane and a high percentage of butane. It should contain 80% butane and 20% propane, but the composition of the gas cylinders currently used has been changed to 50:50, according to the Analyst’s Department.

The composition has been changed without any approval.

Former Director of the Consumer Affairs Authority Thushan Gunawardena says that the Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardena, as well as the Minister of State for Consumer Protection Lasanath Alagiyawanna, were informed about this. However, the ministers have not taken any action in this regard, says Thushan Gunawardena.

Gunawardena had recently warned that there had been several accidents due to the explosion of gas cylinders and that if the necessary steps were not taken, it would be really dangerous.
