The Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage says that President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa did not show any interest in importing rice and he was even blamed for it by the president.
“We import not only rice but also a large number of crops. We also import milk powder. We have nothing to do with this until the country is self-sufficient. You know, it is useless to import only organic rice. Then we have to import organic milk too.
So we did not want to import rice. In fact, the President did not want to import this rice. I was even scolded for this. I made a request to the farmer to bring their rice two weeks before the press. But the farmers did not sell their paddy. They said there was no paddy to sell. If there is nothing to feed the people we have nothing to do without importing. “
Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage was responding to a question raised by the Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa in Parliament yesterday (21) as to whether the recently imported rice was produced using organic fertilizer.
