The Supreme Court has ordered the Inspector General of Police to immediately conduct a comprehensive probe into the incident in which State Minister Lohan Ratwatte allegedly threatened a group of inmates at the Anuradhapura Prison, as the Fundamental Rights (FR) petition filed by eight aggrieved inmates was taken up for hearing today (21).

The Supreme Court further ordered that the Attorney General be consulted as the probe is launched.

The petition was taken up before a three-member Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Gamini Amarasekara, Yasantha Kodagoda and Janak De Silva.

The petitions are seeking an order be made transferring them to the Jaffna Prison as the security of the Anuradhapura Prison was inadequate. Accordingly, the Bench ordered the Superintendent of the Anuradhapura Prison to transfer the inmates to another prison.

Further hearing of the petition will be taken up on February 15, 2022.
