The General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers’ Service Union Mahinda Jayasinghe says that the Governor of the North Western Province Raja Collure will be compelled to withdraw his statement that the November salary of teachers who do not report for duty on October 21 will be suspended.
Mahinda Jayasinghe emphasized that a provincial governor does not have the power to suspend salaries.
“Various politicians are making various statements regarding the opening of 21 schools and we have seen the Governor of the North Western Province Raja Collure say that if teachers do not come to 21 schools on 21st their November salary will be suspended. I am sorry to say that such a statement was issued by him who was the leader of an old leftist party in this history and is now the Governor.
There is no such possibility. We emphasize to the teachers of this country especially the North Western Province that we will not allow your salary to be affected. Therefore, we urge the immediate withdrawal of this statement made by the Governor. Whether that is the case or not, we will definitely launch this strike on 21st and 22nd. We emphasize that if possible, if show your power by suspending the November salary of the teachers and then we will show the power of the teachers’ principals as well. ”
Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers’ Service Union Mahinda Jayasinghe said this in response to the statement made by Raja Collure.
